Good Food at Goodwood
Goodwood: So Much More Than Cars and Horses
Just over a week ago, I spent a day @goodwood. Like many, I’d always associated it with cars and horse racing—but I quickly discovered there’s a whole other side to Goodwood that revolves around food, farming, and wellness.
We started the day at the onsite Farm Shop, a charming space filled with produce that had travelled less distance than I had. From sausages and premium cuts of meat to their award-winning cheese, everything is made with care and integrity. We even saw their new sausage-making machine in action—it can produce in five minutes what would take a person an entire week!
Next, we hopped on a tractor for a whistle-stop tour of Goodwood Home Farm, one of the largest lowland organic farms in the UK. Goodwood is deeply committed to sustainability, practicing nose-to-tail dining at their restaurant Farmer, Butcher, Chef, and running an integrated field-to-fork operation.
We met their Saddleback pigs and learned about how they were in the process of transitioning to “free choice milking”—a method that allows cows to decide when they want to be milked or graze, rather than being herded on a set schedule.
There was a strong focus on soil health too. Goodwood’s farming methods follow the principles set by the Soil Association, ensuring the land is nurtured responsibly and the produce is of the highest quality.
While others opted for the vintage Land Rover off-roading experience, I chose to explore a different side of Goodwood—health and wellness. I attended a fascinating session on gut health, filled with practical tips I could take home. I also learned about Goodwood’s range of wellness retreats, from full five-day programmes to short one-night escapes designed to kick-start healthier habits.
We wrapped up the day with a drive through ancient woodland in a vintage Land Rover, arriving at a secret location where we sampled Goodwood’s own gin and enjoyed more outstanding food by Chef Matt, cooked alfresco on a Big Green Egg bbq. @biggreenegguk
